The Weimaraner is a fairly young breed of dog that came about in early 19TH century Germany. Throughout its early career, the distinctively grey “Weim” was bred by the nobles of the court of Weimar who sought to combine into one breed all of the worthwhile qualities of the different breeds they used in their expeditions against the abundant game in Germany. Among the qualities the Weimaraner breeders sought were speed, good scenting ability, courage, and intelligence. |

Formerly, the Weimaraner was a big game dog used on wolves, wildcats, deer etc. When these became scarce in Germany, the breed was supported by a Weimaraner breeder club originally started by a few fanciers. At this point it was extremely hard to obtain a Weimaraner as one had to become a member of the Weimaraner breeder club prior to purchase of one. This was a strict attempt to keep the breeding and the lines pure. The American, Howard Knight, became a member and was able to import two specimens to the US and helped found the Weimaraner club in this country while serving as its first president in 1929. |
