American Bulldog

The American Bulldog originally came from a line of Bulldogs that were used in England as working dogs who drove and caught cattle and guarded their masters’ property. The breeds strength, courage, and familiarity with livestock led to its’ popularity in the brutal sport of bull baiting. When this sport was outlawed in England, the original type of Bulldog almost disappeared and was replaced with the shorter, stockier, less athletic dog we now know as the “English Bulldog”. Fortunately the original Bulldog was preserved by working class immigrants who brought them with them to the American South where they were used for many tasks.

American Bulldog Breed

By the end of World War II the breed was almost extinct, however a returning war veteran, John D Johnson, decided to resurrect the breed. Along with Alan Scott and several other American Bulldog breeders, they began to carefully breed American Bulldogs, keeping careful records while maintaining the breed’s health and working abilities.  American Bulldog breeders today mainly breed the Scott type American Bulldog and the Johnson type American Bulldog.

The American Bulldog is a gentle and loving dog and affectionate with their owners. They are fearless when it comes to defending however and do so very well. They get along well with pets they have been raised with, but can become dog aggressive with dogs of the same sex and should generally be housed with a dog of the opposite sex.

They are fine with strangers if they have a chance to meet them. They love children but might be unintentionally too rough with them and therefore should be supervised. They are also very alert to what is going on around them and their property. The American Bulldog is mostly an independent thinker and lives to please its master.
